The infographic below describes the steps involved in developing a MOOC. It will give you an idea of who needs to be involved and the expertise required, pedagogical considerations and technical requirements as well as what do before, during, and after your MOOC.
DESIGN TIPS:
Unlike traditional courses, you do not know your learners’ prior knowledge, competences, preferences, and needs. This needs to be considered when designing a MOOC because you have learners coming from all different backgrounds.
MOOCs have large enrollments and automated assessment strategies need to be considered. For example, automatically graded quizzes, peer assessment activities, cohort discussions, etc.
Educational resources have to be generic to accommodate the diversity of learners.
Impossible to provide learners with individualized feedback. Instructors need to rely on an overview of learner performance as oppose to individual marks. For example, the instructor can rely on course analytics and video statistics to understand how their learners are doing and progressing through the course.
Include activities that encourage learners to become contributors as oppose to just recipients of knowledge.
