MOOCs are a relatively recent phenomenon, and therefore their quality and long-term effectiveness on employee development has yet to be determined. By gradually phasing in MOOC opportunities in professional development and using analytics to study the online learning habits and preferences of employees, an organization can start to see if MOOCs are an effective tool for developing employee’s skills and competencies. Another approach would be to solicit recommendations from those employees who have already completed MOOCs that could be relevant to others in the organization. The variety offered by the different kinds of MOOCs available has enormous potential as a tool for employee professional development, either as a replacement or for augmenting current company offerings.
